Royal Wedding Poll
We asked 150 of their linguists to name their favourite English Royal Wedding of the 20th century, completely dividing the respondents.
The marriage of Princess Elizabeth to the Duke of Edinburgh and Prince Charles to Lady Diana Spencer tied in top spot in a poll of overseas people to discover their favourite English Royal Wedding from the past 100 years.
In third place was the marriage of George V1 to Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon (later the Queen Mother) perhaps due to the popularity of the Oscar-winning movie The King’s Speech.
The marriage of the future Queen to the Duke of Edinburgh was the first Royal Wedding televised live internationally and is remembered with great affection by many, while the bashful Lady Diana Spencer’s marriage to Prince Charles was possibly the most eagerly anticipated Royal Wedding of them all. This was the marriage, of course, which produced Prince William, who marries Kate Middleton on Friday 29th April.
One of those who voted was Nilgün Bayram from Turkey, had particular difficulty choosing her favourite Royal Wedding. She thought that each and every one of them was “like a fairy tale”. |
